• Mustafa's research has focused primarily on adenosine, a chemical messenger that is known to influence the airways of asthmatics and also its role in regulation of blood flow to the heart.


• Adenosine is a chemical that the body releases to increase blood flow by opening blood vessels after injury.


• In the lungs it can cause bronchospasms and narrowing of the airway resulting in inflammation in the lungs making breathing difficult.
