Subject of Grant: How does the brain process sounds? How does the brain know where sounds originate? The focus is on brainstem circuits that perform the initial calculation of source location based on delays in the arrival of a sound at the two ears. Dr. Spirou studies the cellular and circuit mechanisms by which the brain extracts this information and encodes source location.

Benefit: This work will help with designing new devices/therapies to address hearing loss and provide more information about how the brain works.
